‘Advanced talks’ What Fabrizio Romano is now saying about Liverpool target?
Adrien Rabiot, the midfield maestro Liverpool desperately needed, is slipping through their fingers as Marseille swoops in to steal the show.
Liverpool’s summer transfer window has been, shall we say, “subdued,” much to the chagrin of fans who anticipated a flurry of signings.
Despite Arne Slot’s arrival at Anfield, the Reds mustered just two new additions: Georgian shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa, an exciting but ultimately lone bright spark in an otherwise di, affair.
Meanwhile, Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho were quietly shuffled off to Brentford, as if anyone was supposed to notice.
It is no secret that there was fleeting interest in Xavi Simmons – fleeting being the operative word here – yet the window fizzled out like a forgotten sparkler on Bonfire night.
Rabiot heading towards Marseille
Now, Liverpool are going to miss out on yet another midfield target. According to none other than Fabrizio Romano, Olympique Marseille are on the brink of securing Adrien Rabiot, the French international who many had pegged for a move to Anfield as a free agent.
Romano posted on Twitter:
“Olympique Marseille are in advanced talks to sign Adrien Rabiot as new midfielder! Negotiations underway with Rabiot on contract terms. OM are optimistic to get it done in the next 48h — here we go, expected soon!”
To be honest, Rabiot would have slotted into Liverpool’s midfield like a glove, offering genuine competition to Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.
The 29-year-old has been criminally underrated in recent years. Yet it seems the Reds will have to make do without the “world-class” player that David Trezeguet himself once gushed over.
Rabiot would have become a star in the Premier League. Yet it is now unlikely that we will get to see the Frenchman in England. Now that the maestro is set to return to his home country to play for Roberto De Zerbi at Marseille.
Perhaps next summer, Liverpool will surprise us – but let’s not hold our breath.
